Saturday, Shanivara
a birth falling on a Saturday
What the tradition reads
Saturday, Shanivaram, is the seventh and last of the varas, ruled by Shani, Saturn, the same name given as the day's presiding deity. Astrosurkhiyan's tradition assigns the day the quality of tamas, matching the tamas given to Tuesday, and calls it a day of rest and recovery, favouring patience, service, ordinary work and charity, with resting on Saturday specifically recommended for the sake of long life, while the native is advised against starting new ventures and urged to keep careful watch over health on this particular day. Wikipedia's account of the Surya Siddhanta's fixed hora sequence, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon, places Saturn first in that cycle yet last among the seven weekdays it names, since the succession loops back around to the Sun to open the week again on the day after. Shani's own astrological reputation as the most exacting and delay bringing of the classical planets sits comfortably with the day's own emphasis on patience and rest rather than on beginning anything new.
The story
Shani, Wikipedia's article records, is the son of Surya and Chhaya in most medieval retellings, born, like several of the tradition's more difficult figures, from the same substitute wife Surya's own radiance once made necessary. Shani's own defining myth turns not on his father but on his wife, the daughter of the gandharva king Chitraratha, whom he neglects one day in favour of his devotion to Krishna; enraged at being ignored, she curses him so that his gaze alone, from that day on, brings misfortune and hardship to whatever it falls upon. A god cursed by his own household into an affliction he never sought, and who is nonetheless remembered above all as a devotee rather than as a villain, fits Shanivara's reading as a day for patience and service rather than for ambition, its rest recommended not as idleness but as the deliberate avoidance of a gaze, Shani's own, that the tradition asks no one to invite carelessly.
