The Pratipada tithi
a birth on a Pratipada tithi, in either fortnight
What the tradition reads
Pratipada is the first of the fourteen tithi names shared by both halves of the lunar month, so the same name marks the day after the new moon in the waxing, shukla, fortnight and the day after the full moon in the waning, krishna, fortnight. A tithi itself is not a fixed span of clock time but the interval in which the Sun and Moon's angular distance grows by twelve degrees, so Pratipada's actual length varies with how fast the Moon happens to be moving. Clickastro.com names Brahma, the creator, as the tithi's ruling deity and classes it among the three Nanda tithis, the tithis myzodiaq.in reads as opening the heart to social connection and creativity, favoured for marriage, celebration and the purchase of anything meant to give pleasure. Clickastro.com adds that Pratipada grants immense blessing and suits religious ritual, festival and wedding alike, while cautioning that the Moon's own weakness on the Shukla paksha Pratipada, so soon after new moon, makes some ceremonies better held a little later in the fortnight than on the opening day itself.
The story
Brahma, the deity the tradition gives to the tithi that opens each fortnight, is described in Puranic telling as bringing himself into being inside a cosmic golden egg, the Hiranyagarbha, from which the whole of the created world afterward proceeds. Wikipedia's account names him within the Trimurti as the Creator specifically, the god credited with everything, the Vedas included, that exists to be arranged, discovered or lived within, standing apart from Vishnu who sustains what is made and Shiva who eventually unmakes it. That a beginning tithi, the very first turn of a new fortnight, should carry the name of the god who begins the world itself gives Pratipada's reading of blessing and festivity its clearest root: a day patterned, in miniature, on the larger act of creation, fit for whatever a person means to set going, tempered only by the same caution the tradition gives every true beginning, that what is newest is not always yet at its strongest.
