The Ekadashi tithi
a birth on an Ekadashi tithi, in either fortnight
What the tradition reads
Ekadashi is the eleventh of the fourteen shared tithi names, one of the three Nanda tithis, a class myzodiaq.in reads as joyful and socially open, favouring marriage, celebration, art and luxury, though the same source cautions against hard labour, confrontation, fasting or surgery on a Nanda day. Clickastro.com instead names Rudra as Ekadashi's ruling deity and calls it the most auspicious of all sixteen tithis, favouring fasting and worship, weddings, pilgrimage and spiritual activity above all else, a reading that leans toward austerity rather than toward the Nanda class's festivity. Wikipedia's own article on Ekadashi confirms the tithi's association with fasting specifically, describing the discipline as a means of gaining control over the mind and senses and directing that control toward spiritual progress, with health benefits noted alongside the tithi's devotional purpose, so that the tradition as a whole reads Ekadashi as auspicious chiefly through restraint rather than through the indulgence its Nanda classification alone might suggest.
The story
Wikipedia's own account of Ekadashi's origin legend tells of a beautiful woman who sprang forth from the eleventh sense of the god Vishnu, understood there as the mind, and who used that power to defeat a demon named Murdanav in battle. When Vishnu woke from the sleep during which she had fought and won, he blessed her by giving her the name Ekadashi, and promised that whoever fasted on her day, mastering all eleven of their own senses as she had once embodied them, would attain moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death. A tithi born from an act of self mastery strong enough to defeat a demon fits the tradition's reading of Ekadashi as the most auspicious day for fasting and spiritual discipline of all sixteen, its own myth offering the same lesson the day's practice asks of anyone who observes it, that restraint, rightly directed, is itself a form of victory.
