The Dwitiya tithi

a birth on a Dwitiya tithi, in either fortnight

What the tradition reads

Dwitiya is the second of the fourteen shared tithi names, falling the day after Pratipada in both the waxing and the waning fortnight of the lunar month. Clickastro.com names its ruling deity as Vidhatha, and classes it among the three Bhadra tithis, which myzodiaq.in reads as a span in which the mind grows clear and organised, logic and reason coming to the fore, and which the same source favours for beginning a business, signing a contract, starting building work or education, while cautioning against risky or impulsive ventures on the same day. Clickastro.com's own reading favours Dwitiya for beginning music education and for laying the foundation of a commercial or residential building, and permits marriage on the tithi, though it advises against oiling the body on this particular day. Read together, the sources place Dwitiya just after the more purely joyful Pratipada as a day for turning a fresh start into something ordered and workable.

The story

Vidhatr, the deity clickastro.com gives for Dwitiya under the spelling Vidhatha, is recorded by Wiktionary as a Sanskrit word built from vi plus dhatr, creator or supporter, and used as an epithet of either Vishnu or Brahma rather than naming a wholly separate god. Where Pratipada's Brahma stands for the world's first act of creation, Dwitiya's Vidhatha leans, under this epithet's other reading, toward Vishnu, the member of the Trimurti Wikipedia describes as presiding over sattva, the preserving force that keeps what has been made in good order rather than bringing it into being or eventually dissolving it. A tithi named for the one who orders and sustains, arriving the day after the tithi of pure creation, fits closely with the tradition's own reading of Dwitiya as the day for turning a new venture into a structure meant to hold, the foundation poured, the lesson begun, the arrangement made sound enough to last past its first, more purely joyful morning.
