The seventh profection year
general summary for a seventh house annual profection year (ages 6, 18, 30, 42 and so on)
What the tradition reads
Annual profections give each year of a life to the next sign around the chart, counted in whole signs from the rising sign, so that the seventh sign from the Ascendant is reached in the seventh year, and again every twelfth year after that, at ages six, eighteen, thirty and onward. The tradition reads a seventh house profection year through the natural meaning of that house, partnership, marriage, open agreements and the person dealt with as an equal rather than as a dependent, and treats the ruler of the seventh sign, activated for the year as the lord of the year, as the single planet whose condition and current transits matter most to understanding what the year is actually about. A seventh house year is read as a year in which the chart's attention turns outward toward another person or a formal agreement rather than inward toward the self, suited to partnership begun, tested or renewed, contracts entered or ended, and, in the older texts, to open dealings with rivals as readily as with allies, since the seventh house has always carried both meanings at once. It stands opposite the first house year in the cycle, and the tradition reads the two as a matched pair, self, then the other, six years apart each way.
The story
Vettius Valens, the second century astrologer whose ten book Anthology is, on Wikipedia's account, the longest and most detailed astrological treatise to survive from that period, is the only substantial surviving ancient source for the technique; his approach throughout the Anthology leaned on his own case files, more than a hundred sample charts, tested against events he already knew had happened, which is part of why the method reads less like abstract theory and more like a technique built by trial against real dates. Annual profections fell out of common use for a long stretch after Hellenistic astrology itself declined, and only returned to ordinary practice as Hellenistic sources were properly translated and taught again from the late twentieth century onward, a revival closely associated with Chris Brennan's teaching under the name hellenisticastrology.com, which built worksheets and wheels specifically to make the technique's simple arithmetic, age divided by twelve, remainder counted forward from the Ascendant, usable without specialist training.
