Vesta in Cancer
the asteroid Vesta in the sign Cancer, in modern Western asteroid astrology
What the tradition reads
Vesta in Cancer is read by modern asteroid astrologers as the placement most turned toward household and kin. Always Astrology reads it as devoted to serving others, a natural caregiver who wants to be needed and who withdraws when the care goes unnoticed, carrying a strong sense of responsibility to family and home that can overpower personal wishes; it holds that such a person is willing to make that sacrifice, which may make them appear cold, and reads them as intuitive and compassionate, inclined to take on the pain of others and needing to attend to their own. Astrology Club reads the same placement as guarding the flame of the home and the right to nurture unconditionally, with a mission to shelter and feed the people of one's life, literal children among them but friends, lovers and associates as well, and an acute focus on the emotional needs of those close by. By the pattern that page applies throughout, what is guarded is also what gets withheld, so nurturance, self acceptance and unconditional love are named as the things a person is likely to deny themselves. Cafe Astrology's keywords for Vesta, devotion, warmth and a sense of purpose, stand behind both readings.
The story
Vesta's cult began where the readings put her. Wikipedia's account of the goddess records that her worship, like that of many gods, originated in the home, and only afterwards became an established cult of the Roman state, under the reign of either Romulus or Numa Pompilius, with most sources naming Numa. Tradition placed the beginning of her worship in Italy at Lavinium, the mother city of Alba Longa and the first settlement of the Trojan refugees who came with Aeneas, and from Lavinium the worship passed to Alba Longa; Roman magistrates appointed to higher office still travelled to Lavinium to sacrifice to Vesta and to the Penates, the household gods of the Roman state, whose images were kept in her temple. The poet calls her Vesta Iliaca, Vesta of Troy, and her hearth the hearth of Ilium. Her priestesses, the Vestal Virgins, administered the temple and sustained its fire, and the household connection ran the other way too: at the Vestalia, domestic and family life in general were represented by the festival of Vesta together with the Penates.
