Vesta in Aries
the asteroid Vesta in the sign Aries, in modern Western asteroid astrology
What the tradition reads
Vesta's sign readings are a modern layer, dating from the 1970s revival of the first four asteroids rather than from any older tradition, and the two delineations consulted here agree in reading Aries as the most self reliant of its placements. Always Astrology reads Vesta in Aries as self motivated and in need of independence, able to focus intensively on its work, passionate and brave, on a path that leads to many personal accomplishments but little involvement with others; it warns that such a person may feel alone, and that the task is to keep that independence without shutting everyone else out. Astrology Club, working from the image of Vesta as guardian of a sacred flame, reads the same placement as a mission that protects the flame of creative freedom, exploration and adventure, cause driven, unafraid of challenge, competition or obstacle, guarding rights of self expression and self empowerment and looking to no one else for inspiration or support. Its reading also holds that what a person protects is what gets sacrificed in the search for spiritual truth, so that here it is freedom and independence themselves that feel most at risk of being given up. The story
The flame the delineations borrow was a real fire. Wikipedia's account of the sacred fire of Vesta describes an eternal flame in ancient Rome dedicated to the goddess who protected hearth, home and family, its institution traditionally attributed to the legendary king Numa Pompilius in the seventh century BC. It burned in Vesta's circular temple in the Roman Forum, below the Palatine, and was tended by the Vestal Virgins, a priesthood that began with two members, grew to four, and eventually to six. Chosen by lot from patrician families, they served thirty years, ensuring that the flame never went out and performing rites tied to domestic life. Because Vesta was the hearth itself, that one fire was held to stand for the life of every Roman household and for the vitality of the state at once, and its unbroken burning was believed to guarantee the goddess's protection and the enduring strength of Rome. The keeping of it was an exacting duty measured in hours: Wikipedia's account of the priestesses records that the Vestals took turns supervising the hearth so that at least one of them was stationed there at all times, and that a Vestal who let the fire go out was punished with whipping.
