Juno in the twelfth house

the asteroid Juno in the twelfth house of the Western chart

What the tradition reads

The twelfth house is given by Alan Leo as the house of the occult tendencies, whose connection with the fourth he reads as a psychic inheritance of thought from the past, with joy as possible a result as sorrow; he calls it the most critical of the twelve, and in the chapter he devotes to it the most mysterious. He names it the house of confinement and of self undoing, the house of the voluntary recluse as much as of the prisoner, and the house of enemies, where a person may prove his own worst enemy, and he reports the older reputation as sorrow, enemies, imprisonment and misfortune. He counts it cadent and assigns to it the feet. Juno, read by astrologers only since the 1970s, is given by Cafe Astrology as commitment and partnership, and as the place where a person is bothered by not being treated with respect and fairness, a place the same source calls both a trigger and a potential power. Wikipedia's page on asteroids in astrology reads it as an indicator of what a person requires to feel satisfied in love. Joining those readings to this house is a step no consulted source takes: Cafe Astrology's Juno pages cover the signs alone, and no other reachable page found for this entry treats Juno by house, so the position is recorded here without a separate delineation.

The story

A house the tradition reads through withdrawal has a myth waiting for it. Wikipedia reports the Daedala, a fire festival on Cithaeron near Plataea, as including an account of Hera's quarrel with Zeus and their reconciliation, and gives her the epithet Nympheuomene, led as a bride, used at Plataea in connection with that festival. In an aetiological myth attached to one of her local cults, the page adds, Hera retired to the woods after a quarrel with Zeus, her hiding place was discovered by a female goat, and she was obliged to return. Elsewhere the same withdrawal is formalised in worship: at Stymphalos in Arcadia a tradition held there was a triple shrine to Hera the Girl, the Adult Woman and the Separated. What the tradition preserved, in other words, was not only the wedding but the absence afterwards, and then the leading back. That is the material of the twelfth house, where the tradition reads what is withdrawn from view before it is brought out again.
