Juno in Aries
the asteroid Juno in tropical Aries
What the tradition reads
The reading of Juno is modern, dating in practice from the 1970s and the first asteroid ephemeris, so what follows is a recent delineation rather than an old doctrine. Cafe Astrology sets the frame for every Juno placement: the sign it occupies marks where a person wants to excel and also wants the scales level, where unfair or unequal treatment stings more than it would elsewhere, and where insecurity can turn into manoeuvring, while mastery of the same ground becomes a source of strength. In Aries, the delineation written by the site's astrologer Annie reads a refusal to take second place. Insecurity is said to tempt such natives into trickery in order to feel first or best, which defeats itself, because a win that was not taken straightforwardly does not satisfy. Being thought needy, or thought to be outside what is known, is named as the particular irritant. On the side of partnership, the same source holds that a partner is needed who leaves room for independence and who understands the wish to lead, to begin things and to innovate. Read as the tradition states it, this is a placement about equality of standing rather than about any one bond.
The story
The goddess behind the name was not only a bride. Wikipedia records that the warlike aspect of the Roman Juno is apparent in her attire, and that she was often shown armed, and describes her as the divine protectress of the community, showing a sovereign and a fertility character often joined to a military one. At Lanuvium she was Sespeis Mater Regina; at Tibur and Falerii, Regina and Curitis. When the boundary between the living and the dead was felt to be unsafe, the community is said to have invoked the protection of the warlike Juno Sospita, the Saviour, whose later temple at Rome was vowed by the consul G. Cornelius Cethegus in 197 BC and consecrated and opened in 194 BC. The same page reports the reading of Georges Dumézil and Vsevolod Basanoff, who traced her epithets to a threefold pattern: sovereign as Regina and Moneta, armed protectress as Curitis the spear holder, goddess of the community's fertility and wealth as Mater. A goddess who kept a spear as well as a wedding veil sits easily beside a sign the tradition reads as first out of the gate.
