Chiron in Taurus

Chiron (2060 Chiron) in tropical Taurus, read in the modern Western manner

What the tradition reads

No older tradition speaks of Chiron in Taurus, since the body itself was found only in 1977; the delineation below is modern, published by Cafe Astrology under the astrologer Annie. Its general rule is that the sign Chiron occupies is where a person knows better, preaches the lesson well, and struggles to absorb it personally. Taurus is fixed earth, ruled by Venus, and the delineation turns on possession, comfort and worth. The page accordingly reads guilt held onto for enjoying material things, comfort and luxury: the entitlement to occasional indulgence is granted in the head and not believed further down, while others are convinced of their own worth with real skill. Compensation is read as running either way, too much indulgence or too little, with the excess guilt the constant in both. The same delineation reads needs for security and safety as running very deep here, and sometimes working against their owner when left unexamined. The resolution the page offers is general to Chiron and not particular to this sign: not getting over the sensitivity but recognising it, trusting oneself, and finding something worth having in the imperfection.

The story

The centaur of the myth was born of an awkward parentage. Wikipedia's account names him the son of the Titan Cronus and the Oceanid Philyra, sired when Cronus had taken the form of a horse, and records that Philyra abandoned the child soon after his birth out of shame and disgust. What survived that beginning was the most civilised of his kind. Where centaurs were held to be wild, indulgent drinkers, violent when drunk, Chiron was intelligent, civilised and kind, and Greek art marks the difference in his body: his front legs are human rather than equine, and he is often shown clothed, carrying a branch hung with the hares he has caught. The body named after him is solid as centaurs go. Estimates of its diameter have run from about 150 kilometres in the 1990s to 218 kilometres from combined Spitzer and Herschel data, unusually large for a comet nucleus; the term proto-comet has been used of it as well. Cafe Astrology's ingress tables put Chiron in Taurus from May 1976 to June 1983, and again from June 2026, following a retrograde return to Aries that autumn, with the passage settled from April 2027.
