Chiron in Sagittarius

Chiron (2060 Chiron) in tropical Sagittarius, read in the modern Western manner

What the tradition reads

Chiron in Sagittarius is a modern reading, the body having been discovered in 1977, and the delineation here is Cafe Astrology's, by the astrologer Annie. Her general rule holds that the sign Chiron occupies names what a person champions in others and absorbs least easily. Sagittarius is mutable fire, ruled by Jupiter. The page reads an intense craving for meaning and for belief in something greater than the self, a championing of free thinkers, and real skill in encouraging others to find their own philosophies, their own truths and their own experience; it also reads a belief in positive thinking and manifestation held firmly here. Against that it sets a private sense of being somewhat lost on the same levels: ideas about life's meaning that are original and many, held with a feeling of disconnection from them and insecurity about them. Learning to trust one's own vision of the world is named the empowering move, which is the general Chironic resolution applied to this sign, since Cafe Astrology reads the wound not as a defect of belief but as the difficulty of granting oneself the authority granted freely to others.

The story

This is the one sign that shares the centaur's own shape. Wikipedia's table of the signs glosses Sagittarius as the Archer and names the figure a centaur, yet the Greeks did not put Chiron there. In his own myth the reward for what he gave up was a place in the sky: Zeus took pity on him and set him among the stars, and the Greeks identified him with the constellation Centaurus rather than with the zodiac's archer. In Ovid's Fasti he passes into the stars on the ninth day, with Achilles weeping beside him. The rest of his learning fits the sign as well: Apollo taught him prophecy along with medicine and music, and Wikipedia names him a great healer, an astrologer and a respected oracle, first among centaurs and highly revered as a teacher and tutor, with Jason among the pupils who came to Mount Pelion. Cafe Astrology's ingress tables put Chiron in Sagittarius from September 1999 to December 2001, and before that from November 1948 to February 1951, with a retrograde return between June and November of that year.
