What the tradition reads

Chiron in Pisces is a modern reading, the body having been discovered in 1977 and given its meanings since; the delineation here is Cafe Astrology's, by the astrologer Annie. Her rule for Chiron by sign holds that its sign names what a person urges on others and withholds from the self. Pisces is mutable water, ruled by Jupiter in the classical scheme and by Neptune in the modern one. The page reads a distinctly soft side and a readiness to consider that other people have histories worth knowing, or to assume as much, before judgment is passed, with forgiveness coming easily. The wound is placed in the excess of the virtue: forgiving too quickly, which the page holds can keep a person attached to what would be better left behind, and taking on far too much guilt. It also reads an excellent counsellor who gives more than is received and falls behind on their own care in the process. Cafe Astrology's general frame applies: this is an area of hypersensitivity met with unusual self honesty, where the expectations held of the self are unreasonable, and the resolution offered is recognition rather than cure.

The story

The ninth day belongs to this sign's imagery. In Ovid's Fasti the wounded centaur reaches for herbs, fails to heal himself, and after nine days with a weeping Achilles beside him passes into the stars; in the fuller account he had first relinquished his immortality, since the poisoned wound could not be closed and could not kill him either. Water figures in the body's story too, and not as expected. Chiron brightened sharply in February 1988 and was found in April 1989 to have grown a cometary coma, with a tail detected in 1993, and the Hubble Space Telescope photographed it wrapped in that coma in 1996; yet water is not a major component of the veil, because at such a distance from the Sun water does not sublimate, and the small quantity of carbon monoxide found in 1995 was reckoned enough to account for the coma on its own. Cafe Astrology's ingress tables put Chiron in Pisces from February 2011 to April 2018, with a retrograde return between September 2018 and February 2019, and before that from March 1960, settled in January 1961, to April 1968.
