What the tradition reads

The reading of Chiron in Libra dates from after the body's discovery in 1977 and belongs to modern practice; the delineation followed here is Cafe Astrology's, by the astrologer Annie. Her rule is that the sign Chiron holds is the one whose lessons a person defends in public and fails to apply in private. Libra is cardinal air, ruled by Venus. The page reads a staunch belief in seeing the other side of a story, in mediating and in meeting people halfway, together with real wisdom about relationships that makes an excellent counsellor, and then the gap: these beliefs prove hard to practise at home, and the reading expects far more to be given than received, even where the belief in equality is genuine and strongly held. Interpersonal conflict is read as a source of considerable anxiety and guilt for this placement, disproportionately so. The general frame Cafe Astrology sets over every Chiron placement applies here too: the area is one of hypersensitivity and unusual self honesty rather than denial, the overcompensation follows from never feeling that enough has been done, and the resolution offered is to work with the sensitivity, not to be rid of it.

The story

Libra is the sign of the scales, and the word the sources keep for the centaur is just. Wikipedia calls him the superlative centaur among his brethren, the wisest and justest of all the centaurs, and sets him against the rest of his kind, who were notorious like satyrs for being wild, lusty, overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, violent when intoxicated. His difference is put down to his parentage, since he was not directly related to the others, and Greek art marked it by giving him human front legs and clothes. The body named after him crosses Libra faster than it crosses most signs, because the orbit is eccentric and the sign fell near its closest approach to the Sun: perihelion came in February 1996. Cafe Astrology's ingress tables have it enter Libra in September 1995 and first cross into Scorpio in December 1996, with a retrograde return to Libra between April and September 1997, about fifteen months of direct passage, among the briefest in the tables.
