Chiron in Leo
Chiron (2060 Chiron) in tropical Leo, read in the modern Western manner
What the tradition reads
The reading of Chiron in Leo is recent work rather than old doctrine: the body was discovered in 1977, and this delineation comes from Cafe Astrology, written by the astrologer Annie. Her rule for Chiron by sign is that its sign names what a person champions in others and cannot easily claim. Leo is fixed fire, ruled by the Sun. The page reads a firm championing of standing out as unique, of taking pride in oneself and of enjoying life to the full, held together with difficulty in applying any of it personally: guilt at seeming prideful, at bragging, at showing off after doing well, and sometimes guilt at enjoying downtime or childish things, alongside a feeling of inadequacy on the creative side that the head does not endorse. The same delineation calls this placement a powerful teacher, guide and motivator, and puts the wound precisely in the gap between philosophy and practice, in that dancing as though nobody were watching is believed in wholeheartedly and performed self consciously. Cafe Astrology treats these as the wounds worth reflection rather than as faults, and reads the sensitivity as the source of the wisdom held here.
The story
Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the pupil the centaur is most remembered for was a hero with a short bright life. Wikipedia's account has Peleus bring Achilles to Chiron when the boy was old enough, and Chiron receive him as a disciple and feed him the innards of lions and boars and the marrow of bears; in some versions the boy had been called Ligyron before, and Chiron gave him the name he kept. What Achilles was taught he passed on in turn, teaching Patroclus the medical arts he had learned. One of the most common Roman treatments of Chiron is the wall painting from the basilica at Herculaneum, where he teaches Achilles the lyre; in that Roman version the lower body is fully equine and the ears are a satyr's, more beast than the older Greek images allowed. Cafe Astrology's ingress tables put Chiron in Leo from July 1991 to September 1993, about two years, and before that from September 1940, settled after a retrograde return in June 1941, to July 1943.
