Ceres in Virgo

the dwarf planet Ceres in tropical Virgo, in modern Western asteroid astrology

What the tradition reads

Ceres is read in modern Western practice as the shape nurture takes, and in Virgo the delineations consulted turn it into useful work. Bob Marks reads Ceres in Virgo as nurtured by being given something to do, detailed work above all, and notes the sign's more awkward channel: this placement may try to nurture by criticising, which he says should not simply be allowed to pass, and may itself feel cared for when given a highly detailed criticism, which he holds is fine in moderation and no further. Astrology Club calls this the healer figure among the twelve, reaching for what is hurt or overlooked, making whole, strengthening what it loves, sheltering the things most people rush past, with its attention turned to the wellbeing of people, animals and nature, and marks self sacrifice, humility and a need to feel useful as its signature. Cafe Astrology, which groups Ceres by element rather than giving twelve sign readings, has the earth signs nurturing through food, sustenance and practical help. All of this is modern delineation rather than inherited doctrine, and Cafe Astrology calls Ceres an additional point rather than a standard body of a reading.

The story

Darkstar Astrology states that Ceres has a great affinity with Virgo because Spica, the constellation's brightest star, is the chaff of wheat held in the hand of the Virgin, and the same page treats Ceres as a grain goddess whose meaning cannot be reduced to that one image. The grain itself is not in doubt. Wikipedia's article on the goddess lists among her attributes the sickle, the wheat sheaf and the crown of wheat stalks, and records that much of Rome's grain was imported from Sicily, called her earthly home by later Roman writers. Wikipedia's article on the body adds that Piazzi proposed the name for the Roman goddess of agriculture, and that the old astronomical symbol still used in astrology is a sickle, a tool of harvest rather than a badge of office. A sign read through service, detail and harvest, holding a point read through nourishment and the crop, is the pairing Darkstar draws.
