Ceres in the tenth house

the dwarf planet Ceres in the tenth house, in modern Western asteroid astrology

What the tradition reads

Ceres is read in modern Western practice as the shape nurture takes, and the tenth house is the one Alan Leo gives to profession, business ability, fame, honour and material reputation, the house he also calls the Mid-Heaven, and by which he reads all worldly activities and moral responsibilities. Bob Marks reads Ceres in the tenth house as a placement that draws people in public: such a person may become popular without wanting it, since as soon as they appear in public others come to them to be tended, while in private they are left alone. He reads the same traffic running up and down the chain of authority, an employer coming for nurture or an employer inclined to provide it, and he adds a vocational note, that careers ruled by Ceres, meaning anything connected with food or clothing, may attract someone with this placement. Cafe Astrology's general delineation supports the wider frame, giving Ceres to caregiving, teaching, mentoring, farming and cooking. Among the sources consulted, only Marks's lesson reads Ceres through the houses, so this reading is one astrologer's rather than a tradition's.

The story

Rank is the tenth house's subject, and this body has held two sorts. Wikipedia's article on Proserpina records that at the Aventine temple Ceres was by far the senior of the three deities housed there, and that she was counted among the Dii Consentes, Rome's approximate equivalent to the Greek Twelve Olympians, identified with Demeter. The body named after her was announced as a new planet in 1801, was given a planetary symbol, and kept its place in the tables for over half a century before being reclassified; the International Astronomical Union made it a dwarf planet in 2006. Wikipedia's asteroid survey records that astrologers still discuss Ceres among the asteroids, where it is sometimes informally called the queen of the asteroids for its size and symbolic prominence. A senior goddess, a demoted planet and an informal title granted afterwards by its users is an apt provenance for the house of standing.
