Ceres in the eighth house
the dwarf planet Ceres in the eighth house, in modern Western asteroid astrology
What the tradition reads
Ceres is read in modern Western practice as the shape nurture takes, and the eighth house is the one Alan Leo gives to death and to all matters pertaining to legacies or affairs connected with death, and which he calls an occult house for its relation to the fourth, reading regeneration and rebirth by it as well, the raising of a faculty to what he calls a higher octave, and heading the chapter he gives it death and the dream consciousness. Bob Marks reads Ceres in the eighth house first through intimacy, as a placement where closeness is the channel through which nurture is both given and felt, and then through the house's other subjects: he calls it a good position for tending people who are going through a process of rehabilitation, and he cites Demetra George's Asteroid Goddesses for the observation that Ceres in the eighth house may be found in the charts of those who work in a hospice, providing nurture to the dying. Cafe Astrology's general delineation stands behind that reading, tying Ceres to grief and to loss as much as to feeding. Among the sources consulted, only Marks's lesson delineates Ceres by house, so this reading rests on one astrologer's text and the one book he cites in it.
The story
The eighth house keeps the part of the story that the pomegranate settles. Wikipedia's article on Proserpina records that Jupiter sent Mercury to order Dis to free her, but that she had eaten several of the pomegranate seeds he offered, and that those who have eaten the food of the dead cannot return to the world of the living; Pluto insisted she had eaten willingly and must stay with him for half the year. The same page gives the consequence above ground: when Ceres greets her daughter's return the crops grow and flowers open, while during the time Proserpina resides below the world goes through winter and the earth yields no crops. Wikipedia's asteroid survey summarises the same arc as the reason the astrological reading exists at all, treating the loss and the partial return as what the point is about. A house read through what is shared, surrendered and recovered has the whole bargain behind it.
