Ceres in Gemini
the dwarf planet Ceres in tropical Gemini, in modern Western asteroid astrology
What the tradition reads
In modern Western practice Ceres is read as the way nurture is offered and the way it is taken in, and in Gemini both delineations consulted move that exchange into words. Bob Marks reads Ceres in Gemini as nurtured by communication of any sort, talking or writing, and adds the sign's other associations, variety, short journeys and several small tasks carried at once, as the further things that bring the nurtured feeling here. Astrology Club calls this the butterfly figure among the twelve, tending thoughts, minds and the shared ability to communicate, with the joy and the smiles given to others counted as its form of nourishment; the same page reads a need to be constantly learning, exploring and investigating, and names this the placement people come to when spirits want lifting. Cafe Astrology, which groups Ceres by element instead of giving twelve sign readings, has the air signs defaulting to mental and communication support, which agrees with both. The Gemini reading, like every Ceres reading, belongs to a modern layer of practice: Wikipedia records that the four asteroids only started being recognised by astrologers in the 1970s.
The story
Two details of the myth sit in the register Gemini keeps. The first is a name. Wikipedia's article on Proserpina gives her name as a Latinisation of Persephone, perhaps influenced by the Latin proserpere, to emerge or to creep forth, with reference to the growing of grain, so that the daughter's name carries the motion of a shoot coming up. The second is an errand. In the Latin telling summarised on the same page, Ceres seeks her daughter across the world in vain, and it is Mercury, sent by Jupiter, who carries the order to the underworld that Proserpina be freed; the bargain that follows turns on what she had already eaten there. Wikipedia's article on the goddess adds that during the search Ceres called out where three or four roads meet, and that her rites preserved a lamentation raised at the crossroads. Word, errand and crossing road are exactly where the Gemini delineations place the nourishment, which makes this one of the placements where the myth and the modern reading line up without much strain.
