Black Moon Lilith in Virgo
the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in tropical Virgo
What the tradition reads
Black Moon Lilith is not a body but a mathematical point, the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit, the place furthest from the Earth in the Moon's path and the point where it moves most slowly; the tradition reads the point as a record of old shame rather than as a body with mass or light of its own. Cafe Astrology's delineation reads Lilith in Virgo as shame around precision itself: discomfort with paying close attention to detail, organisation or routine, a fear of seeming ordinary or overly careful that can push a person to prove otherwise by leaving projects deliberately unfinished, since an unfinished project cannot be judged imperfect. The same source reads this as producing cycles of over control followed by abandonment, a perfectionism that swings between doing too much and refusing to do anything at all. The tradition's resolution, consistent with every sign Lilith touches, is acceptance: allowing the wish for order and craft to be simply a preference rather than a flaw to hide.
The story
Lilith enters modern astrology through the astrologer Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, who in 1918 proposed that a second, undiscovered moon orbited the Earth, naming it Lilith after the medieval Jewish legend of Adam's first wife. He connected the claim to an earlier one made around 1898 by the scientist Georg Waltemath, already discredited by the scientific community within a few years, and the second moon has never been confirmed to exist. What remained was the name, reattached by later astrologers to a point, the far focus of the ellipse the actual Moon traces around the Earth, opposite the Earth in that shape and completing a circuit of the zodiac roughly every eight years and ten months. In Virgo, a sign the tradition reads as self scrutiny carried almost to excess, a point defined by the precise, calculable geometry of an orbit's emptiest reach fits with unusual neatness into a sign already preoccupied with getting the details exactly right.
