Black Moon Lilith in the fourth house

the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in the fourth house

What the tradition reads

With Black Moon Lilith in the fourth house, the tradition reads her themes of exile and refusal as centred on home and family rather than on the more public houses. Cafe Astrology's delineation of Lilith by house ties the fourth house to the same reading given for Lilith in Cancer, since both govern home and nurture: shame around being needy or dependent, and a nurturing instinct that was stifled somewhere along the way, leaving a person uncomfortable both asking for care and openly offering it. The tradition reads this discomfort as producing extremes, an outpouring of caretaking followed by withdrawal and resentment, until the pattern is recognised for what it is. As with every Lilith placement, acceptance, here of one's own need for security and belonging, is the tradition's suggested way through rather than continued avoidance of the need.

The story

The fourth house is angular, sitting at the base of the chart opposite the tenth, and governs home, family and the private roots a life is built on rather than the public standing the tenth house governs. Alan Leo, who names this angle the Nadir or Lower Meridian, gives it the environment, the life of the householder, hidden and secret matters connected with parentage or domestic affairs, and the conditions at the close of life, summarising the fourth as the personal environment where the tenth is the individual environment. Lilith's placement here draws on two histories at once: the astrological point's origin in Sepharial's 1918 proposal of an undiscovered second moon, a claim that did not survive scrutiny, and the older legend of Lilith, whose story is in its own way a story about leaving a household rather than staying inside one on terms she had not chosen. A point already carrying the memory of a refused home, placed in the house that governs home itself, gives the combination unusual weight: whatever this Lilith represents is read as bound up with the private, foundational sense of where, and with whom, a person actually belongs.
