Black Moon Lilith in the eleventh house
the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in the eleventh house
What the tradition reads
With Black Moon Lilith in the eleventh house, the tradition reads her themes of shame and refusal as showing among friends, groups and hopes for the future rather than in the more private houses. Cafe Astrology's delineation of Lilith by house ties the eleventh house to the same reading given for Lilith in Aquarius, since both govern belonging to a group: shame around wanting to be part of a team, a community, or simply one of a crowd, paired with wariness toward people who seem to need that belonging openly. The reading warns against rejecting this basic need for community, since doing so produces its own binge and purge pattern on a social level, throwing oneself into a group and then withdrawing and feeling ashamed, repeating the cycle rather than resolving it. Because the eleventh house is also read as the house of hopes and wishes, the tradition adds a further layer: Lilith here can describe a hope a person is almost ashamed to admit to, precisely because it asks for belonging on the person's own terms rather than the terms already on offer. As with every Lilith placement, self acceptance is read as the way through.
The story
The eleventh house carries a benefic reputation as the house of friendship and of hopes fulfilled: Alan Leo, taking it by itself and free from affliction, calls it a benefic house whose natural tendency seems to be towards good fortune, pleasure, happiness and prosperity, a notably gentler house than the harsher readings sometimes given to Lilith herself. The pairing of the two brings together two very different histories: Lilith's, rooted in the medieval legend told fully in the Alphabet of Ben Sira, in which she is made from the same earth as Adam, refuses to lie beneath him, and flies away rather than accept a household that would not have her as she was, and the eleventh house's, rooted in a reading of the houses that gives this one friends, acquaintances, hopes, wishes and aspirations rather than mere accumulation. Sepharial's 1918 astrological Lilith, the mean lunar apogee named after the older legend, entered a practice that already read the eleventh house for exactly the kind of belonging the old story shows Lilith denied; later astrologers made the connection explicit, reading a point that represents what has been exiled, placed in the house of friendship and community, as describing a person's complicated history with being let in or kept out of groups that mattered.
