Black Moon Lilith in Taurus
the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in tropical Taurus
What the tradition reads
Black Moon Lilith is not a body but a mathematical point, the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit, the point where the Moon moves slowest and stands furthest from the Earth; the tradition that reads it treats the point as a marker of buried shame rather than as an object with any physical presence. Cafe Astrology's delineation reads Lilith in Taurus as shame around self indulgence and holding on: guilt for not sharing, for enjoying comfort without apology, for savouring something slowly rather than needing it urgently, so that the sign's own natural pleasure in the physical world becomes exactly what this placement has learned to distrust in itself. The same source reads a discomfort in these natives around people who indulge themselves freely, alongside a private difficulty in ever feeling truly satisfied, whether that shows as hoarding, as sudden purging of possessions or pleasures, or as an anxious oscillation between the two. The tradition reads this placement as sometimes inherited, an older generation's own unlived appetite for ease passed down rather than openly lived, and its suggested resolution, as with every sign Lilith touches, is acceptance of the need rather than continued shame at having it.
The story
Lilith enters modern astrology through the astrologer Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, who proposed in 1918 that a second, undiscovered moon of the Earth existed and gave it the name Lilith, borrowed from the medieval Jewish legend of Adam's first wife. Sepharial linked his claim to an earlier one made around 1898 by the scientist Georg Waltemath, whose proposed moon had already been dismissed by the scientific community by the turn of the century, and no such body has ever been confirmed. What survived was the name, reattached by later astrologers to a point rather than a body: the far focus of the ellipse the Moon actually traces around the Earth, opposite the Earth itself in that shape, completing a circuit of the zodiac roughly every eight years and ten months. In Taurus, a sign the tradition reads as holding on rather than letting go, a point defined by an orbit's emptiest, most distant reach sits in an unusually direct tension with the very quality, possession, the sign is best known for.
