Black Moon Lilith in Sagittarius
the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in tropical Sagittarius
What the tradition reads
Black Moon Lilith is not a body but a mathematical point, the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit, the place furthest from the Earth in the Moon's path where it also moves slowest; the tradition reads the point as a marker of buried shame rather than as a body with light or mass of its own. Cafe Astrology's delineation reads Lilith in Sagittarius as shame around restlessness and questioning: discomfort with a need to challenge accepted belief, to travel, or to seek some larger meaning, paired with distrust of people who pursue those same Sagittarian impulses without apparent hesitation. The same source reads this discomfort as producing its own extremes under stress, a sudden reach for expansion or escape followed by retreat and self doubt. The tradition's resolution, consistent across every sign Lilith touches, is acceptance: allowing the restlessness and the questioning to be simply what the person needs rather than something to justify or hide.
The story
Lilith enters modern astrology through the astrologer Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, who in 1918 proposed a second, undiscovered moon of the Earth and named it Lilith for the figure of medieval Jewish legend said to have been Adam's first wife. He linked his claim to an earlier one from around 1898 by the scientist Georg Waltemath, discredited by working astronomers within a few years, and the moon itself has never been confirmed to exist. The name survived its own discrediting: later astrologers reattached it to a point, the far focus of the ellipse the actual Moon traces around the Earth, completing a circuit of the zodiac roughly every eight years and ten months. In Sagittarius, the sign the tradition reads as reach toward a further horizon, a point whose entire meaning depends on distance, the furthest the Moon ever travels from the Earth in its own path, sits with a certain aptness inside a sign built around exactly that kind of far reaching movement.
