Black Moon Lilith in Leo
the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in tropical Leo
What the tradition reads
Black Moon Lilith is not a body but a mathematical point, the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit, the place where the Moon stands furthest from the Earth and moves at its slowest; the tradition reads this empty point as a marker of shame rather than as an object with substance of its own. Cafe Astrology's delineation reads Lilith in Leo as shame around visibility itself: guilt for calling attention to oneself, for wanting the spotlight, or for wanting openly to be better than a rival, so that the sign's own natural wish to be seen becomes precisely what this placement has learned to apologise for. The same source reads discomfort in these natives around people who seek applause without embarrassment, alongside a private, rarely admitted need for exactly that recognition. Left unexamined, the reading holds that the shame produces its own extremes, a sudden reach for the spotlight followed by retreat and self reproach, resolving, the tradition suggests, only once a person accepts that the wish to be seen doing something well is not itself a fault.
The story
Lilith enters modern astrology through the astrologer Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, who in 1918 proposed a second, undiscovered moon of the Earth and named it Lilith for the figure of medieval Jewish legend said to have been Adam's first wife. He linked the claim to an earlier one from around 1898 by the scientist Georg Waltemath, discredited by working astronomers within a few years, and no such body has ever been confirmed to exist. The name outlived the claim: later astrologers repurposed it for a point rather than an object, the far focus of the ellipse the actual Moon traces around the Earth, completing a circuit of the zodiac roughly every eight years and ten months. In Leo, the sign the tradition reads as presence and warmth claimed openly, a point defined by absence and by the Moon's most distant, most hidden reach sits in unusually direct tension with the very visibility Leo is read for.
