Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn

the mean Black Moon Lilith (the mean lunar apogee) in tropical Capricorn

What the tradition reads

Black Moon Lilith is not a body but a mathematical point, the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit, the place where the Moon travels slowest and stands furthest from the Earth; the tradition reads this empty point as a marker of shame rather than as a planet with substance of its own. Cafe Astrology's delineation reads Lilith in Capricorn as shame around ambition itself: discomfort with wanting to succeed, to reach worldly goals, or to be respected for competence, paired with unease around people who are openly status conscious or business minded. The same source notes that connecting honestly with one's own ambition and need for others' esteem can be difficult for this placement, though doing so is described as capable of changing a life; left unexamined, the discomfort instead produces extremes of striving followed by self reproach. The tradition's resolution, as with every sign Lilith touches, is moderation reached through accepting the ambition as legitimate rather than continuing to alternate between denying it and overreaching for it.

The story

Lilith enters modern astrology through the astrologer Sepharial, the pen name of Walter Gorn Old, who in 1918 proposed that the Earth had a second, undiscovered moon, naming it Lilith after the medieval Jewish legend of Adam's first wife. He connected the claim to an earlier one from around 1898 by the scientist Georg Waltemath, discredited by the scientific community within a few years, and no second moon has ever been confirmed. What remained was the name, reassigned by later astrologers to a point, the far focus of the ellipse the actual Moon traces around the Earth, opposite the Earth in that shape and completing a circuit of the zodiac roughly every eight years and ten months. In Capricorn, a sign the tradition reads as structure built through patient, public achievement, a point defined by an orbit's quietest, most distant reach sits in pointed contrast with a sign whose whole ambition is to be visibly, undeniably arrived.
