Venus in Pisces

Venus in tropical Pisces

What the tradition reads

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives Venus her exaltation in Pisces, read in the classical scheme as a planet lifted beyond even the comfort of her own domiciles in Taurus and Libra, sharing here in the sign's own dissolving of ordinary boundaries rather than in anything more measured or comparative. Pisces is a mutable water sign, the last of the twelve, read by the tradition as compassion and a felt kinship with lives unlike one's own, and Venus exalted there is read as a love expressed at its most unconditional and its most forgiving, less interested in fairness than in simply accepting whoever is actually in front of it. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Venus in Pisces as dreamy and soft-hearted, carrying what it calls an "elusive charm," drawn to partners who need real help, and willing to stretch the truth a little rather than deliver a heartbreak directly. The tradition names an avoidance of hard commitment as the placement's ordinary cost, a love that can drift rather than decide even while genuinely wanting to, though the exaltation here is credited with a compassion that asks for almost nothing in return: an acceptance few other placements are capable of offering quite so completely.

The story

Pisces is, in its most common telling, Aphrodite's own myth rather than a story she is simply paired with afterward: caught in the open with her son Eros when the monster Typhon attacked, she transformed them both into fish and swam to safety. An older, gentler telling has her born a second time from this same element, an egg carried ashore by fish and hatched by doves, the fish rewarded afterward with a permanent place in the sky for the favour. Venus exalted in Pisces is, uniquely among all twelve signs, simply arriving home to the myth that is already hers, the goddess of love returning to the water that has already saved her once and, in one telling, made her in the first place. It is read as the one placement in which Venus needs no borrowed lineage or family resemblance to explain her comfort in the sign; the compassion and the dissolving of boundaries the tradition credits to Pisces are, for Venus alone, simply her own oldest story replaying itself.
