What the tradition reads
Venus holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Cancer by Ptolemy's classical scheme; the sign belongs to the Moon, and Venus there is read as affection carried into the host planet's own instinct for protection and emotional memory rather than expressed in its usual sociable, comparison-weighing register. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, read by the tradition as home and the instinct to guard whoever has been let inside, and Venus set there is read as a love that wants commitment and predictability above nearly anything else, shown through caring action rather than through words. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Venus in Cancer as genuinely put off by anything impersonal, prone to real anxiety about being abandoned, and slow to move past a hurt once it has actually landed, sometimes retreating rather than risking it again. The tradition names a fear of rejection as the placement's ordinary cost, a Venus that can read an ordinary silence as the beginning of a loss, though the same sensitivity is credited with a tenderness that, once security has genuinely been established, very few other placements offer as reliably or as patiently.
The story
Aphrodite's grief for the mortal Adonis is one of her gentlest myths: when a wild boar gored him fatally during a hunt, she is said to have mourned so completely that anemone flowers sprang up wherever his blood had fallen, a small, permanent memorial grown directly out of a loss she could not undo. Cancer's own crab, Karkinos, meets a comparably small, doomed end, crushed almost instantly while trying to help Hera against Heracles, and is given its own permanent memorial in the sky anyway, out of what looks very much like pity rather than any real victory. Both myths turn an ordinary, quickly finished loss into something kept and remembered rather than simply let go. Venus in Cancer is read against exactly that instinct: an affection less interested in the sudden, showy declarations other placements favour than in the slower, protective work of making sure whatever it has loved, even briefly, is not simply forgotten once the moment itself has passed.
