Venus in Aquarius

Venus in tropical Aquarius

What the tradition reads

Venus holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Aquarius by the scheme Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos sets out; the sign belongs classically to Saturn, and to Uranus in the modern astrologers' addition, and Venus there is read as love and value coloured by that host's own independence rather than expressed in the planet's most typically warm and sensory register. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, read by the tradition as innovation and a preference for the unconventional over anything simply inherited, and Venus set there is read as an affection that puts friendship and intellectual connection before romance in the usual sense. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Venus in Aquarius as presenting itself as forward-thinking and unconventional in love, wanting to be admired for its intellect and its visions rather than for anything more ordinary, and needing considerable personal freedom kept fully intact within any relationship. The tradition's caution is a coolness that can read, to a more sentimental partner, as detachment, since this Venus resists open emotional display almost on principle, though the tradition insists the warmth is genuine, only expressed through the space it gives rather than the closeness it withholds.

The story

Aphrodite's own origin, in Hesiod's account, is a violent one: when Cronus cut away his father Uranus's members with an adamantine sickle and threw them into the sea, a white foam gathered around them, and from that foam the goddess of love and beauty was born, drifting ashore on a shell. She is, by this reckoning, made directly from the primordial sky god himself, the very figure later astrologers assigned as Aquarius's modern ruler. It is an unexpected inheritance: love and beauty rising out of the same ancient sky whose own domain, the tradition says, prizes independence, invention and a certain remove from the ordinary, sentimental attachments of the world below. Venus in Aquarius can be read through this lineage as a love that never quite forgets its own strange, elemental origin, warmth born from something vast and impersonal, arriving on the shore fully formed but always, somewhere underneath, carrying a little of the sky it came from.
