The Sun in Sagittarius
the Sun in tropical Sagittarius
What the tradition reads
The Sun holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Sagittarius by the scheme Ptolemy sets out in the Tetrabiblos; the sign belongs to Jupiter, and the Sun there is read as identity expanded by the host planet's own appetite for a wider horizon rather than expressed in the Sun's most contained, personal register. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, read by the tradition as the reach toward belief, travel and higher learning, the instinct to aim past whatever field one grew up inside. The Sun placed there is read as a sense of self built around exactly that reach: a person who defines who they are less by where they started than by how far they are still willing to go. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Sagittarius natives as restless, friendly and idealistic, prizing personal freedom and directness above nearly everything else, with a temper that flares quickly in fire sign fashion and fades almost as fast. The tradition names a reputation for irresponsibility as the placement's ordinary cost, an identity so committed to the open road that it can leave obligations behind rather than see them through, though the same restlessness is credited with an optimism genuinely infectious enough that most people forgive the placement its escapes rather easily.
The story
Sagittarius carries two competing identities in Greek myth: some name the archer as Chiron, the wise centaur who tutored Jason, and who is said in one version to have set both Sagittarius and the constellation Centaurus in the sky himself, to help guide the Argonauts on their voyage. Others, following the astronomer Eratosthenes, name him instead as Crotus, a satyr credited with inventing the bow, who lived contentedly among the Muses until they asked Zeus to place him in the sky demonstrating the very skill that had won their friendship.
