What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos places the Sun's fall in Libra, directly opposite its exaltation in Aries; a fall is read not as a fault so much as a planet working furthest from the register it finds easiest, and Libra, the sign of Venus, asks an identity to measure itself against everyone else in the room rather than to simply assert itself as Aries would. Libra is a cardinal air sign, read by the tradition as balance, fairness and the company of others, and the Sun set there is read as a sense of self built through comparison and negotiation: a person who finds it difficult to know who they are except in relation to whoever else is present. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Libra as sociable and refined, deeply committed to justice and equality, yet prone to avoiding open conflict even at the cost of a small dishonesty, since keeping the peace can matter more than being entirely truthful about what it wants. The tradition names indecision as the placement's ordinary cost, an identity so occupied with weighing every side fairly that it can struggle to settle on one, though the same instinct is credited with a diplomacy and charm that signs built purely around self assertion, such as the Sun's own Aries, rarely manage half as gracefully.
The story
Libra is the one sign of the twelve without an animal or a god of its own; the Greeks once counted its stars simply as the claws of the scorpion beside it, and only later separated them out and gave them to Themis, the goddess of the ancient, sacred law, whose scales became the model for every image of blind justice that followed her. The Roman writer Manilius called it the sign "in which the seasons are balanced," marking the autumn equinox, the one day when light and dark divide the sky exactly in half, and legend held that Rome itself was founded at the moment the Moon stood in this sign. It is a fitting, if uncomfortable, home for the Sun's fall: the same light that rules unmistakably from its own throne in Leo and rises to its highest confidence in Aries crosses into Libra at the precise astronomical instant it must surrender half of every day to darkness, exchanging Aries's spring equinox, where day is just beginning to outweigh night, for the autumn crossing where the balance tips the other way. Themis's scales ask every claim to be weighed evenly against its opposite, and the Sun, arriving at the one moment of the year it can least insist on its own primacy, is read as finally forced to agree to the terms.
