What the tradition reads
The Sun holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Cancer by Ptolemy's classical scheme; the sign belongs to the Moon, and the Sun set there is read as identity coloured by the host planet's own instincts for feeling and protection rather than expressed in the Sun's most natural, outward register. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, read by the tradition as home, memory and the instinct to guard whatever has been let inside the shell, and the Sun placed there is read as a sense of self built the same way: private, protective of the people it loves, and guided by intuition ahead of open declaration. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Cancer as reticent about sharing its inner self, drawn to objects and memories with real history behind them, and hospitable and dependable once trust has been established, though quick to withdraw at the first sign of bluntness. The tradition names moodiness as the placement's ordinary cost, an identity that can be governed by a tide of feeling it did not choose and cannot always explain, though the same sensitivity is credited with a depth of care that more openly confident signs rarely match: a Sun that measures its worth by who it has kept safe rather than by what it has been seen to achieve.
The story
Cancer's crab, Karkinos, appears in only one moment of myth: sent to distract Heracles during his battle with the many headed Hydra in the marshes of Lerna, it seized the hero's foot, was crushed beneath it almost immediately, and was rewarded anyway, lifted into the sky by Hera for the trouble it had caused her enemy. The historian Richard Hinckley Allen called it the most inconspicuous figure of the whole zodiac, a faint little apology of a constellation whose myth exists mostly to explain why so unremarkable a shape was granted a place among the stars at all. Set beside Helios, the sun god who was invoked in oaths as the one witness nothing in the world could hide from, the pairing reads almost as an act of mercy: the smallest and least heroic creature in the sky given a home in the sign of the very light that sees everything and forgives it anyway. Where the Sun elsewhere burns and drives and occasionally destroys, as it very nearly did in the hands of its own son Phaethon, in Cancer it is read as a gentler office, warming a small, quiet, easily overlooked thing simply because it was there and needed shelter, not because it had earned anything grand.
