What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives the Sun its exaltation in Aries, the sign in which the classical scheme reads a planet as elevated beyond even its own domicile's comfort, set apart from Leo, the sign the Sun actually rules, and instead lifted by the sheer momentum of the sign it borrows. Aries is a cardinal fire sign, the first of the twelve, and the tradition reads it as pure initiation: the instinct to begin before circumstances are fully ready, ruled by Mars and coloured by his directness. The Sun exalted there is read as an identity built around exactly that instinct, a sense of self expressed most naturally through starting things rather than through maintaining them. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Aries natives as direct, uncomplicated and physically inclined, motivated by new beginnings and challenges, carrying an unmistakable independence and a kind of childlike charm that comes from living mostly in the present rather than the past. The tradition names impatience as the placement's characteristic cost, an identity so oriented toward the next thing that it can struggle to finish what the last thing required, though the same restlessness, exalted rather than merely tolerated here, is credited with a courage that many more careful signs never develop: the willingness to move first and let the reasons catch up afterward.
The story
The ram that became Aries was Chrysomallus, a flying ram with a fleece of pure gold, sent by the gods to rescue Phrixus and his sister Helle from being sacrificed. The ram carried both children across the sea toward safety; Helle lost her grip partway and fell, giving her name to the strait remembered ever after as the Hellespont, but Phrixus reached Colchis alive, and in gratitude sacrificed the ram that had saved him, hanging its fleece in a sacred grove where it later became the prize Jason and the Argonauts sailed the world to find. It is a myth of rescue paid for with a beginning, one life saved by an animal offered to the gods and treasured afterward as a legend of the west's first great quest. Helios, whose chariot opens every single day the same way regardless of what came before, meets that myth naturally: the Sun exalted in the very first sign of the zodiac is a fitting position for the god whose defining act is always to start the sky moving again, unconcerned with the wreck the day before may have left behind, carrying the same golden light that once, in Chrysomallus's fleece, was itself the treasure a whole voyage was built around.
