What the tradition reads

Saturn's domiciles by Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos (houses of the planets, I.20) are Capricorn and Aquarius, and Leo, opposite Aquarius, is accordingly read by later tradition, as Wikipedia's page on essential dignity explains, as Saturn's detriment, the sign directly across from a planet's own domicile where its natural working meets the most resistance. Leo is a fixed fire sign, ruled by the Sun, and the tradition reads it as the sign of self-expression, generosity of spirit and the wish to be seen and admired for exactly who one is. Saturn set there is read as a coldness applied to precisely the warmth Leo is built to give. Cafe Astrology's delineation holds that it can be difficult for this placement to express or even identify with its own needs for approval and attention, and that it may hold some disdain for people who seem to need personalized care or to distinguish themselves as unique and special. The classical writers name a reluctance to ask plainly to be seen as the placement's ordinary cost, warmth withheld even from the self, though the same reserve is credited with an authority that, when it finally is expressed, carries a weight that placements more comfortable asking for attention rarely earn as convincingly.

The story

Leo's lion was, to the Greeks, the Nemean Lion, a beast impervious to every weapon, which Heracles was sent to kill as the first of his twelve labours. Finding swords and clubs useless against its hide, Heracles cornered it in its own cave and fought it bare handed, catching it in midair as it pounced, one hand on its forelegs and the other on its hind legs, until he bent it backward and broke its spine; Zeus commemorated the labour by placing the lion in the sky. Saturn's own story is one of a very different kind of strength: rather than fighting to keep his throne against his son Jupiter, the Roman Saturn simply withdrew to Italy and ruled quietly there as a king of farmers, a golden age remembered every year at Saturnalia. Set in Leo, the sign of the beast that could not be beaten by any ordinary weapon and had to be met, in the end, with bare and total effort, Saturn in detriment is read as a discipline that does not know this particular kind of open contest, more suited to a quiet retreat than to Heracles's direct, physical victory, restraint asked to hold its ground in a sign built entirely for a fight it would rather not have.
