What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos does not itself use the word detriment, but later tradition, as Wikipedia's page on essential dignity explains, gives that name to the sign directly opposite a planet's own domicile, where a planet is read as weakened rather than at home. Saturn's domiciles by the Tetrabiblos (houses of the planets, I.20) are Capricorn and Aquarius, and Cancer, opposite Capricorn, is accordingly read as Saturn's detriment, discipline and restraint asked to operate on ground built for the opposite instinct. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon, and the tradition reads it as the sign of home, feeling and the instinct to nurture and be nurtured in turn. Saturn set there is read as a coldness applied to precisely the part of life meant to be warmest. Cafe Astrology's delineation holds that it can be difficult for this placement to express its own needs for nurture, a person left, more often than not, to their own resources when it comes to sustaining a home or a family. The classical writers name an emotional self-sufficiency, sometimes closer to loneliness than to real independence, as the placement's ordinary cost, though the same self-reliance is credited with a household that, once actually built, tends to be built to last.
The story
Cancer's crab enters the sky, in the Greek telling, as a small casualty of a much larger labour: Heracles was fighting the Hydra in the swamps of Lerna when Hera sent a crab to nip at his heel, and though he crushed it easily underfoot, Hera set it among the stars anyway for its trouble. Saturn's own Roman story tells of a different, gentler ending than his Greek counterpart Cronus, who had castrated his own father Uranus and was remembered for devouring his own children; driven from the heavens by his son Jupiter, Saturn instead settled quietly in Italy as a king of farmers, ruling over what the poets remembered as a golden age of plenty. Set in Cancer, the very sign carrying Hera's own act of small, if grudging, protection, Saturn in detriment is read through the contrast between the two stories: a discipline more used to exile and self-sufficiency than to shelter, finding itself, for once, in the one sign built entirely around a nurture it does not naturally know how to offer, the way an old king used to ruling alone must learn, late and awkwardly, how an actual home is kept.
