Rahu in Virgo
Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Virgo, its own sign by the alternate view of some jyotish sages
What the tradition reads
Some jyotish authorities, according to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's own account of the differing views among sages, name Kanya, Virgo, rather than Aquarius as Rahu's own sign, and Wikipedia's summary of the node likewise lists Virgo among the signs, alongside Taurus, Libra and Capricorn, where Rahu finds itself comfortable even without full dignity there. Virgo is a mutable earth sign, ruled by Mercury, read by the tradition as the sign of practical service, careful work and exacting standards. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Virgo describes the growth this placement asks for as establishing real limits for oneself and others and developing a more focused, orderly mind, the kind of confidence that comes from actual discipline rather than raw ambition. Rahu there, on this reading, is an appetite unusually well suited to exactly that discipline, a hunger for competence and order that, on the view naming Virgo as its own sign, is read as close to native rather than merely comfortable, though the tradition still credits the placement with real, deliberate effort behind whatever mastery it eventually shows.
The story
Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, where the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods to drink a share of their nectar of immortality, was caught by the Sun and Moon, and lost his head to Vishnu's discus before the theft was complete, the severed head surviving afterward as Rahu. Virgo's own maiden carries several names in the old tellings, among them Astraea, the last immortal willing to remain on earth and keep doing its careful, exacting work once every other god had already withdrawn to Olympus. A being whose whole story is built on a shortcut, an attempt to gain immortality without earning it through the gods' own long labour, meets, in Virgo, the one figure who refused any shortcut at all and kept working the ordinary way long after it stopped being asked of her; Rahu in Virgo, on the reading that gives it real ground here, is read as that same old appetite finally made to slow down and actually do the careful work Svarbhanu himself tried to skip.
