Rahu in Scorpio
Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Scorpio
What the tradition reads
The jyotish texts give Rahu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Scorpio, opposite its own exaltation in Taurus, and the tradition reads a placement here as an appetite on unfamiliar ground rather than one carrying any special dignity of its own. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, ruled traditionally by Mars, read by the tradition as the sign of what will not let go until the truth beneath it is found. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Scorpio describes the growth this placement asks for as loosening the grip a person keeps on the things and people around them, opening instead to the soul's own need for transformation, change and regeneration rather than simply holding on tighter. Because the north node marks unfamiliar ground, the tradition reads this reach toward release and transformation as a real hunger this placement does not come by naturally, an appetite that would rather acquire and keep than let anything go, now asked to grow in exactly the opposite direction. The Western tradition reads the whole node axis chiefly through the house it occupies, treating the sign as manner rather than main subject.
The story
Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu stole a place among the gods to drink their nectar of immortality, was caught by the Sun and Moon, and lost his head to Vishnu's discus before he could finish, the severed head surviving afterward as Rahu, an appetite that outlived the body it once belonged to. Scorpio remembers the scorpion that stung the hunter Orion to death, a sting delivered once and never withdrawn. A being who wanted to keep something, immortality, that was never his to hold meets, in Scorpio, a sign built around endings delivered decisively and without appeal; Rahu in Scorpio is read as that same grasping appetite finally made to face a truth it would rather not uncover, that some things, once taken by force, still end up costing exactly what they were stolen to avoid.
