Rahu in Sagittarius

Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Sagittarius

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts give Rahu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Sagittarius, and the tradition reads it there as an appetite on unfamiliar ground, present without any special strengthening or weakening from the sign itself, though the node's own mulatrikona sign, Gemini, lies directly opposite it. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter, read by the tradition as the sign of belief, higher learning and the instinct to aim past the horizon one was given. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Sagittarius describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to trust an inner intuition in order to uncover more meaning in life, embracing faith and belief even where logic alone cannot explain them, and freeing itself from a more anxious, over analytical state of mind. Because the north node marks unfamiliar ground, the tradition reads this reach toward faith and a wider meaning as a hunger that must be built deliberately, an appetite for belief that does not come as naturally here as it would to Jupiter's own native placements. The Western tradition reads the whole axis chiefly through the house it occupies.

The story

Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods to drink their nectar of immortality, was exposed by the Sun and Moon, and lost his head to Vishnu's discus before the theft was finished, the head surviving afterward as Rahu. Sagittarius's own archer carries two identities in the old tellings, one naming him Chiron, a shape changing centaur who devised the constellation himself to guide the Argonauts, the other naming him Crotus, a satyr credited with inventing archery and placed in the sky at the Muses' own request as thanks for his skill. A being who reached for a belief, immortality, that was never actually meant for him meets, in Sagittarius, an aim that is said never to miss its mark once it is finally loosed; Rahu in Sagittarius is read as that same reaching turned toward belief and meaning rather than toward a substance to be stolen, an appetite for conviction that, unlike Svarbhanu's own theft, is at least aimed honestly at something worth actually hitting.
