Rahu in Pisces
Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Pisces
What the tradition reads
The jyotish texts give Rahu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Pisces, and the tradition reads it there as an appetite on unfamiliar ground, present without any special strengthening or weakening from the sign itself. Pisces is a mutable water sign, the last of the twelve, read by the tradition as the point where boundaries between one thing and another grow thin. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Pisces describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to trust and develop the imagination along with a real capacity for compassion, embracing a more spiritual perspective and moving beyond perfectionism toward genuine self-acceptance. Because the north node marks unfamiliar rather than mastered ground, the tradition reads this reach toward imagination and compassion as something that must be built deliberately by a nature more used to appetite and acquisition than to letting go of firm boundaries altogether. The Western tradition reads the whole node axis chiefly through the house it occupies, treating the sign placement as manner rather than main subject.
The story
Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, where the demon Svarbhanu forced his way into the company of the gods to steal a share of their nectar, and was beheaded by Vishnu's discus the moment his deception was discovered, the severed head surviving afterward as Rahu, hungry and incomplete. Pisces' own two fish are remembered in one telling as Aphrodite and her son Eros, transformed to escape the monster Typhon; the constellation's own stars carry a separate description besides, two fish whose tails are pictured knotted together by a cord at the star known as Alpha Piscium. A being defined by a hunger that survives even after everything else about him has been cut away meets, in Pisces, a pair remembered first for a narrow escape and only afterward, in a separate telling, for the cord that still ties them together in the sky; Rahu in Pisces is read as that same appetite asked, for once, to dissolve its own hard edges and learn a togetherness it does not naturally reach for on its own.
