Rahu in Libra

Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Libra

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts disagree among themselves about which sign gives Rahu, the north node, its highest and lowest dignity: the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra itself names Taurus as the node's exaltation and Gemini as its mulatrikona, while Wikipedia's own summary instead describes Gemini as the exaltation outright, with Libra named only among the signs where Rahu is comfortable rather than fully dignified. Libra is a cardinal air sign, read since antiquity through the image of the scales, the sign of fairness, partnership and even measure. Rahu there is read as an appetite directed toward exactly that territory: a reach toward fair dealing, earned recognition and partnerships that carry real standing. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Libra describes the growth this placement asks for as sensitising oneself to the needs of others, learning tact and cooperation, and genuinely putting oneself in another person's place rather than acting from the self alone. Because the north node marks unfamiliar ground rather than ground already mastered, the tradition reads this reach toward partnership and fairness as something that must be learned and worked for rather than assumed.

The story

Svarbhanu's whole downfall came from a failure of exactly the kind of balance Libra's scales are built to keep: the nectar of immortality, churned from the ocean of milk, was meant to be measured out to the gods alone, and his theft of a portion not owed to him was a breach of a division everyone else had agreed to honour. Vishnu's discus restored the balance by force, cutting him into the head that became Rahu and the body that became Ketu, an old imbalance corrected the only way it could be. Libra's own scales belong, in the constellation's own myth, to Astraea, the goddess associated with justice, who is remembered elsewhere as the last immortal willing to remain on earth once the other gods had already withdrawn to Olympus. Rahu in Libra can be read through this pairing as the appetite that once broke a fair division now placed directly under the scale's watch, an ambition still real and still reaching, but asked, this time, to answer for what it takes.
