Rahu in Leo

Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Leo

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts give Rahu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Leo, and the tradition reads it there as an appetite set down on unfamiliar ground, present without any special strengthening or weakening from the sign itself. Leo is a fixed fire sign, ruled by the Sun, read by the tradition as the sign of self-expression, generosity of spirit and the wish to be seen and admired for exactly who one is. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Leo describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to take real personal risks, which requires a genuine confidence a person cannot simply inherit, moving toward individual creative expression rather than staying safely reliant on others for direction. Because the north node marks unfamiliar rather than mastered ground, the tradition reads this reach toward visible, personal self-expression as something that must be built deliberately, a hunger to be seen that does not come as naturally here as Leo's own native placements would suggest. The Western tradition reads the whole node axis chiefly through the house it occupies, treating the sign as manner rather than main subject.

The story

Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods to drink from the nectar of immortality, was caught by the Sun and Moon, and lost his head to Vishnu's discus before the theft was complete, the head surviving afterward as Rahu, forever hunting the two who exposed him. Leo's own lion was, to the Greeks, the Nemean lion, impervious to every weapon, strangled bare handed by Heracles and placed among the stars by Zeus to commemorate that first, defining proof of his strength. A being who wanted, more than anything, to be counted among the immortals and be recognised as one of them meets, in Leo, a beast that earned its own permanent, admired place in the sky only by first being utterly overcome; Rahu in Leo is read as a hunger for exactly that kind of recognition, a wish to be seen and remembered that, for this placement, must still be properly earned rather than simply seized.
