Rahu in Capricorn

Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Capricorn

What the tradition reads

Wikipedia's account of Rahu names Capricorn among the signs where the node, though not exalted or in its own sign there, nonetheless finds itself comfortable, alongside Virgo, Taurus and Libra. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, given by the tradition to structure, patience and the long climb, and Rahu there is read as an appetite pointed at exactly that territory: ambition, status and a hunger for a position that is built to last rather than won overnight. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Capricorn describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to take charge of one's own life and accept real responsibility for one's actions, developing independence and a mature, self-directed sense of security rather than leaning on others to provide it. Because the north node marks unfamiliar ground, the tradition reads this reach toward authority and self-sufficiency as something that must be built patiently and deliberately, an ambition that, once it has actually done the climbing itself, is credited with an unusually durable kind of achievement. The Western tradition, by contrast, reads the whole node axis chiefly by house, treating a sign placement such as this one as manner rather than main subject.

The story

Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, where the demon Svarbhanu forced his way into a place among the gods to drink from a nectar never meant for him, and was beheaded by Vishnu's discus the moment his deception was discovered, his head living on afterward as Rahu. Capricorn's oldest known form, among the Babylonians, was already a creature of ambition risen from low ground, the goat fish that served there as a symbol of their god Ea. A being who forced his own way upward into a company that had not chosen him meets, in Capricorn, a shape whose own myth is likewise one of rising from what lies underneath into a form thought worthy of standing for a god; Rahu in Capricorn is read through that same climb, an appetite for standing that must be built rung by rung rather than simply claimed in a single reckless reach.
