Rahu in Cancer
Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Cancer
What the tradition reads
The jyotish texts give Rahu no particular exaltation, own sign or special dignity in Cancer, and the tradition reads it there as an appetite set down on ground it does not naturally occupy, present without being especially strengthened or weakened by the sign itself. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon, read by the tradition as the sign of home, family and the instinct to nurture and shelter what is one's own. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Cancer describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to allow real vulnerability, exposing insecurities and personal needs without fear, and making time for home and family life rather than treating those things as secondary to more public achievement. Because the north node marks unfamiliar ground rather than ground already mastered, the tradition reads this reach toward emotional exposure and domestic life as something that must be built deliberately, a hunger for a kind of belonging that does not come as naturally to this placement as it might elsewhere. The Western tradition reads the whole axis chiefly through the house the node occupies, treating the sign placement as manner rather than main subject.
The story
Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself among the gods to steal a share of the nectar of immortality, was caught by the Sun and Moon, and lost his head to Vishnu's discus before the theft could be completed, the head living on as Rahu, forever hunting the two who had exposed him. Cancer's own crab entered the sky as a small casualty of a larger conflict: it nipped at Heracles's heel of its own accord during his battle with the Hydra, was crushed easily underfoot, and Hera set it among the stars anyway afterward for its trouble. A being whose whole story is an attempt to force his way into a table he was never invited to meets, in Cancer, the very sign of the home and the family circle that decides, by its own nature, who belongs inside it; Rahu in Cancer is read as an appetite for exactly that kind of belonging, reaching for a home and a nurture it must earn admission to rather than one it was simply born owning.
