Rahu in Aries
Rahu, the north lunar node, in tropical Aries
What the tradition reads
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's own chapter on planetary states notes that Rahu, in a particular condition it calls Sayana, brings wealth and grain specifically when placed in Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun or Kanya, Aries among the four signs the text singles out this way rather than treating every sign alike. Aries is a cardinal fire sign, ruled by Mars, and the tradition reads it as pure initiation, the instinct to begin before circumstances are fully ready. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the north node in Aries describes the growth this placement asks for as learning to love oneself, trust one's own instincts, and lead without fear, overcoming a fear of independence that can otherwise pull a person back into relying on others to decide for them. The jyotish tradition reads Rahu generally as an appetite for what is unfamiliar rather than a mastery already possessed, so Rahu in Aries is read as a reach toward decisive, self-directed action that must be worked for and does not come naturally, unlike the ease Mars's own placement there would otherwise suggest. The Western tradition, by contrast, reads the whole node axis chiefly through the house it occupies, treating a sign placement such as this one as manner rather than the main subject.
The story
Rahu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu slipped into the row of gods to drink the nectar of immortality set aside for them alone; Vishnu, in the form of Mohini, struck off his head with the discus Sudarshana Chakra before the nectar had gone all the way down, and the head, unable to die, became Rahu, forever pursuing the Sun and Moon who had exposed him. Aries carries its own myth of a rescue paid for by a beginning: Chrysomallus, a flying ram with a fleece of pure gold that Phrixus and Helle's mother Nephele sent, carried Phrixus safely to Colchis after his sister Helle fell into the sea and drowned partway across, and there, in Colchis, Phrixus sacrificed the ram to the gods in turn. A being defined by a single, sudden, unfinished act, a head cut off mid drink, meets, in Aries, an animal whose own story ends just as abruptly, its usefulness spent the moment the rescue is complete; Rahu in Aries is read through that same abruptness, an appetite that seizes its moment immediately rather than waiting for a safer one to arrive.
