Pluto in Sagittarius

Pluto in tropical Sagittarius; because Pluto moves so slowly, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person

What the tradition reads

Pluto takes roughly two hundred and forty eight years to complete the zodiac and lingers in a single sign for well over a decade, so the tradition built around it since its 1930 discovery treats a Pluto sign placement as a mark carried by an entire generation rather than a private detail of one chart. Sagittarius is the sign of belief, law and the wider field a life reaches toward, and a generation carrying Pluto there is read as one asked to remake exactly that territory: what a whole culture is willing to believe, which institutions of law and faith it still trusts, and how far its idea of the world is allowed to extend. Cafe Astrology's delineation puts this plainly for the individual chart as well, describing this Pluto as taking its own beliefs and philosophy of life very seriously, more seriously than most placements do, an intensity of conviction rather than a merely casual outlook. Where the placement runs into difficulty, the tradition reads a belief held so tightly it can no longer bear real challenge, a certainty mistaken for the truth itself, though the same intensity is credited with convictions that, once actually tested and survived, are rarely abandoned again casually.

The story

Long before either was a planet, Hades and Zeus were brothers who divided the whole of creation between them: Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades took the underworld and everything beneath the visible earth, a three way division of sovereignty Wikipedia's account of the god's mythology describes as his central place in Greek cosmogony. Sagittarius belongs to Zeus, called Jupiter by the Romans, the brother who took the sky in that same three way division and pointed his sign toward the horizon and beyond it. Pluto's passage through Sagittarius can be read, in light of that old division, as the underworld brother crossing briefly into the sky brother's own territory, bringing the deeper, harder won knowledge of what lies beneath into the very sign built for reaching outward and upward. What a culture believed about the width of the world, the myth suggests, was never entirely Jupiter's business alone; every so often the brother who knows what is buried gets a turn to say what the belief was standing on.
