Pluto in Capricorn
Pluto in tropical Capricorn; because Pluto moves so slowly, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person
What the tradition reads
Pluto takes roughly two hundred and forty eight years to complete the zodiac and lingers in a single sign for well over a decade, so the tradition built around it since its 1930 discovery treats a Pluto sign placement chiefly as a mark carried by an entire generation rather than a private detail of one chart. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, given by the tradition to structure, patience and the long climb, and Pluto there is read as intensity applied to exactly that climb. Cafe Astrology's delineation names the quest to distinguish oneself through one's own responsibilities as a powerful one under this placement, achievement and duty pursued with a weight that ordinary ambition does not usually carry. A generation carrying the placement is read as one asked to remake, often through real crisis, what responsibility, authority and structure are even for, since Pluto's own business is transformation pursued all the way down rather than reform kept at a comfortable distance. Wikipedia's account of Pluto's own Greek mythology notes that the god was frequently conflated with Ploutos, the god of wealth, since mineral wealth was found underground and the deep earth held the seeds of a bountiful harvest, a fitting undercurrent for a placement read through Capricorn's own material and structural concerns.
The story
Pluto, the Roman name for the Greek Hades, was frequently identified with Ploutos, the god of wealth, since the deep earth Hades ruled also contained the mineral riches and buried seeds a good harvest depended on; Wikipedia's account of the god's mythology calls this association with agricultural success and underground wealth already evident in Hesiod's own poetry. Capricorn's oldest known form, among the Babylonians, was already a creature of that same deep, the goat fish sacred to the god of the waters below the earth, later reimagined by the Greeks as Pan diving into a river and growing a fish's tail to escape the monster Typhon. A god whose own underground wealth quietly nourished the surface world's harvests meets, in Capricorn, a shape whose own oldest form was already half sunk beneath that same surface; a generation under Pluto here is read as one that must dig into the very structures and responsibilities Capricorn prizes to find whatever real, if hidden, worth those structures were built on top of.
