Pluto in Aquarius
Pluto in tropical Aquarius; because Pluto moves so slowly, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person
What the tradition reads
Pluto takes roughly two hundred and forty eight years to complete the zodiac and lingers in a single sign for well over a decade, so the tradition built around it since its 1930 discovery treats a Pluto sign placement chiefly as a mark carried by an entire generation rather than a private detail of one chart, a reading Cafe Astrology's own delineation states directly. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, ruled traditionally by Saturn and, in the modern astrologers' addition, by Uranus, read by the tradition as the sign of the group over the individual and a loyalty owed to the wider community rather than to any single person in it. Pluto there is read as a quest for distinction pursued through exactly that territory: Cafe Astrology's delineation names the quest to distinguish oneself from others as a powerful one under this placement, intensity applied to individuality itself rather than to any more private ambition. A generation carrying the placement is read as one asked to work out, collectively and often painfully, what makes a person genuinely distinct within a community built to prize belonging over standing apart, atmosphere more than any one chart's private signature.
The story
Hades, whom the Romans called Pluto, received the underworld in a three way division of the world he shared with his brothers, Zeus taking the sky and Poseidon the sea; under the later name Plouton he appears in Greek literature mostly in a secondary role, as the possessor of some object a hero must claim, especially in stories of descent into the underworld itself. Aquarius's own water carrier was, to the Greeks, Ganymede, a beautiful Phrygian youth carried off by Zeus to serve the gods forever after as their cupbearer, a mortal singled out from every other person at court and given a permanent, distinguishing place among immortals. A god whose own share of the world was fixed once and for all by an orderly division among brothers meets, in Aquarius, a figure elevated permanently out of the ordinary crowd he came from; a generation under Pluto here is read as pursuing that same singling out, its own version of Ganymede's distinguishing ascent, within a sign that would otherwise rather nobody stand out from the group at all.
