Neptune in Scorpio

Neptune in tropical Scorpio; because Neptune moves even more slowly than Uranus, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person

What the tradition reads

Neptune takes some one hundred and sixty five years to cross the whole zodiac and spends around fourteen years in any one sign, and Cafe Astrology's own delineation treats a Neptune sign placement chiefly as a generational influence for that reason, one shared by everyone born while the planet crossed that stretch of sky and felt personally only where it lines up with the Sun, Moon or another personal point in an individual chart. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, ruled traditionally by Mars, and the tradition reads it as the sign of what will not let go until the truth beneath it is found. Neptune there is read as a vision of an ideal world centred on people actually trying to understand one another, without any expectation that people should therefore be treated identically, since this placement is especially aware of how different backgrounds and environments shape different people. A generation carrying the placement is read as one that dreams collectively of a deeper, more searching mutual understanding rather than of any easier, more superficial equality, atmosphere more than any one chart's private signature, best read alongside whatever else in that chart belongs more properly to the individual.

The story

Neptune, the Roman god of the sea and fresh water, was remembered as a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, the three dividing the world between them, sea, sky and underworld, in equal shares; the Romans also worshipped him, before he became chiefly a sea god, as a patron of freshwater springs and of horses. Scorpio remembers the scorpion that stung the hunter Orion to death, so precisely placed opposite him in the sky that the hunter still sinks below the western horizon each night just as the scorpion rises in the east. A god who shares his own rule with the very underworld Scorpio's own myths so often touch meets, in this sign, a sting that ends one story only so a stranger, more permanent one can begin among the stars; a generation under Neptune here is read as one that dreams of understanding even that darker, more hidden underworld the way Neptune himself is already kin to it, rather than looking away from what it would rather not see.
