Neptune in Pisces
Neptune in tropical Pisces, its own modern domicile; because Neptune moves even more slowly than Uranus, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person
What the tradition reads
Pisces is the one sign the modern astrologers give to Neptune as its own, alongside Jupiter's older, classical rulership there, since the wide, boundary dissolving nature the sign has always carried was felt, once Neptune was discovered in 1846, to suit this newly found planet better than any other. Neptune still takes some one hundred and sixty five years to cross the whole zodiac and spends around fourteen years in any one sign, and Cafe Astrology's own delineation treats even this, its own modern domicile, chiefly as a generational influence, one shared by everyone born while the planet crossed this stretch of sky and felt personally only where it lines up with the Sun, Moon or another personal point in an individual chart. Pisces is a mutable water sign, the last of the twelve, read by the tradition as the point where boundaries between one thing and another grow thin. Neptune there is read as a vision of an ideal world centred on compassion, mercy, empathy, service, sacrifice, intuition, artistry and spirituality, this placement itself described as especially sensitive, intuitive and imaginative. A generation carrying Neptune in its own sign is read as one given an unusually direct hand in reshaping compassion and spirituality themselves for everyone that follows it.
The story
Neptune, the Roman god of the sea and fresh water, was remembered as a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, the three dividing the whole world between them, sky, sea and underworld, in equal shares; before he became chiefly a sea god, Neptune was linked especially to freshwater springs and to horses, worshipped by the Romans as a patron of both. Pisces' own two fish are remembered in one telling as Aphrodite and her son Eros, transformed to escape the monster Typhon and tied together at the tail so as not to lose each other in the water they fled across. Given only this one sign as fully its own, Neptune meets, in Pisces, the very story of a water god's own kin escaping by exactly the element Neptune himself was already given charge of; a generation under Neptune here, in the one sign that finally claims the planet as native rather than visitor, is read as trusting that same water the way Aphrodite trusted it, not merely as a danger to escape but as a medium capable of carrying something worth protecting safely all the way across.
