Neptune in Cancer

Neptune in tropical Cancer; because Neptune moves so slowly, the tradition reads a sign placement like this one for a whole generation as much as for any one person

What the tradition reads

Neptune takes some one hundred and sixty five years to cross the whole zodiac and spends around fourteen years in any one sign, shared by everyone born while it crossed that stretch of sky and felt personally only where it lines up with the Sun, Moon or another personal point. Cafe Astrology's own delineations of Neptune in the signs begin only at Virgo, so a placement this old is read instead through the AstroTwins' account, which also names Cancer, together with Leo, as one of Neptune's two signs of exaltation, its most powerful position. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon, read by the tradition as the sign of home, feeling and the instinct to nurture. Neptune there is read as a dreamer of the domestic space, turning any room into what the same account calls a sacred oasis, tuned in so closely to a home's emotional register that its people sense discomfort before a word is said. The same sensitivity is read as easily overrun: sacrifices made for others slide into resentment, often the residue of an early wound, a parent's illness or addiction, or a childhood home whose boundaries were never safe or clear, prompting an escape into imagination whose fruit can be real creative work. A generation carrying the placement is read as one whose sense of home and emotional safety was shaped by that same fog, atmosphere more than any one chart's private signature.

The story

Neptune, the Roman god of the sea and fresh water, is remembered as a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, the three of them presiding jointly over the realms of heaven, the earthly world with its underworld, and the seas; before the sea claimed him fully, Neptune was linked especially to freshwater springs, worshipped by the Romans also as a god of horses. Cancer's own crab entered the sky as a minor casualty of someone else's fight: according to Greek myth it was crushed under the foot of Heracles for pinching at him during his contest with the Hydra in the Marsh of Lerna, and Hera placed its remains among the stars all the same. A god linked, before the sea ever claimed the whole of him, to the smaller waters that feed it, springs rather than the ocean itself, meets, in Cancer, a small creature that guarded nothing of its own and was destroyed for its trouble anyway; a generation under Neptune here is read as one that dreams of a home tender enough that even the least powerful thing sheltered in it would be remembered rather than simply stepped over.
