What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives the Moon its exaltation in Taurus, read in the classical scheme as a planet lifted beyond even the comfort of its own domicile in Cancer, sharing here instead in the sign's own steadiness rather than its close, private instinct to withdraw. Taurus is a fixed earth sign, read by the tradition as sensuality, patience and a settled attachment to whatever provides real, tangible security, and the Moon exalted there is read as a feeling nature expressed at its most stable and its most trustworthy, emotion grounded in the body's own senses rather than left to drift. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Taurus Moons as earthy and strong willed, comfortable providing solace to others precisely because their own inner foundation is so solid, motivated above all by serenity, comfort and the simple instinct to stop and enjoy what is already in front of them rather than chase what is not. The tradition names resistance to change as the placement's ordinary cost, an emotional nature so committed to what already works that it can be genuinely difficult to move, even toward something better, though the same steadiness is credited with a constancy that few other placements offer as reliably: affection, once given here, that does not waver and rarely needs to be re-earned.
The story
Taurus is most often read as Zeus in disguise, transformed into a magnificent white bull to carry the Phoenician princess Europa across the sea after catching sight of her on the shore; ancient artists, showing only the animal's front half as it swims, imply the rest of his enormous bulk submerged beneath her the entire crossing, an immense power made patient and gentle enough to be climbed onto and trusted. A second telling gives the same stars to Io, another of Zeus's lovers, changed into a heifer, and a third names the Cretan bull that Heracles was sent to capture as one of his labours, wild and immensely strong until it, too, was eventually tamed. Every version shares the same shape: something with far more power than its situation requires, deliberately made calm. Selene's own exaltation in this sign fits the pattern exactly. The Moon that elsewhere pulls entire oceans by tide, and that governs a feeling life capable of real intensity when it needs to, is read in Taurus as choosing, like Zeus's bull beneath Europa, to carry that whole capacity gently rather than to spend it, the same enormous strength simply held steady and offered as something safe enough to lean on.
